The vineyards of Flémalle
Viticulture has been part of the heritage of the Meuse Valley for several centuries. Today, several vineyards in Flémalle are helping to revive this tradition, combining terroir, know-how and respect for the environment.
The Vines of the Fort
Located near the Fort of Flémalle , the "Pennes de Mont" vineyard, created by Jean-Pierre Van Lier , was renamed "Céliandre" in 2014 by Angelo Buccolieri.
In 2021 , the Province of Liège acquired the vineyard in order to convert it into an educational vineyard , in a context of development and growing enthusiasm for viticulture.
Covering an area of 1.3 hectares , the vineyard benefits from a well-drained limestone subsoil and a south-facing exposure , particularly favorable to vine cultivation.
Another distinctive feature: some of the vines are over 14 years old., which constitutes a rare wine-growing heritage in the province of Liège.
It includes several grape varieties:
- Chardonnay , planted in 1997;
- Pinot Gris , planted in 2003;
- Regent , planted in 2003 and 2006;
- Sieger , planted in 2006.
A vineyard focused on passing on knowledge
The educational vineyard allows, in particular:
- to organise practical training courses in viticulture ;
- to host interns as part of the EMR WINE project;
- to test new cultivation methods ;
- to study solutions to reduce the use of inputs ;
- to develop training programs in winemaking .
A place where training, experimentation and the transmission of winemaking know-how come together.
Le Clos Saint-Roch
For centuries, the vine has been part of the heritage and terroir of Wallonia .
The first traces of vineyards date back to the 7th century in Amay , before viticulture developed in Huy and then in Vivegnis , north of Liège, on the well-exposed slopes of the Meuse valley.
It was in 2005 that Jean-Luc Franck and his friends undertook to clear the land and plant the first vines of Clos Saint-Roch .
The vineyard begins with Chardonnay , quickly joined by Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Regent .
Since 2017 , the vineyard has belonged to the Godelaine family , who practice manual viticulture that is attentive to biodiversity and respect for the environment .
