Historical heritage and museums: the 8 castles of Flémalle and the Prehistomuseum
Flémalle has an exceptional historical heritage that spans the ages, from Prehistory to contemporary architecture.
🏛️ The Château de la Petite Flémal': a visual clash between history and modern design
The Château de la Petite Flémal' (or Château communal ) is today the only castle in Flémalle whose interior can be visited . Built starting in 1614, this historical monument surprisingly combines Meuse Valley history and avant-garde architecture:
Contemporary renovation : The interior has been completely transformed by the renowned Liège-based architecture firm Pygma . It now boasts a minimalist, bright and ultra-modern style (white structures, clean open spaces).
Glass and design : The architects used glass partitions and steel to flood the spaces with natural light. A modern extension at the rear seamlessly connects the building to the gardens.
Accessibility for people with reduced mobility : This modernization incorporates elevators and designer access ramps, making the site accessible to all.
Tours and gardens : Guided tours of this unique modern interior are available upon request for groups of 8 or more through the Tourist Office. Its magnificent gardens (Italian, French, and English styles) are open to the public free of charge all year round.
🥾 The 7 other castles of Flémalle to discover on a hike
The other seven castles in the area are privately owned. While they no longer reveal their inner secrets (the famous Château d'Aigremont) (having recently closed their doors to tourists), they make superb destinations for walks:
Chokier Castle : a picture-postcard silhouette perched on its rocky spur above the Meuse.
Château d'Aigremont : a jewel from the early 18th century to admire from the road and the outside paths.
Château de Hautepenne : an imposing semi-medieval, semi-Renaissance structure nestled in greenery.
Ramet, Ramioul, Mons and Croix Saint-Hubert castles: perfect visual landmarks during your walks in the forest or in rural areas.
🦖 Other must-see cultural sites in the town
The Préhistomuseum : this open-air Prehistory Museum is unique in Europe. Located in a preserved natural setting, it offers an unusual outdoor escape game ( Sapiens Got Talent ), a farm and archery or fire workshops.
The Fort of Flémalle : an unmissable historical site for military history enthusiasts, a major witness to both world wars.
The Walloon Centre for Contemporary Art (CWAC) : a reference place for art lovers, offering exhibitions of high-quality artists.
